Boston & Lowell Railroad begins regular service.

June 24, 1835

The line runs from downtown Boston to Lowell and connects Boston with the textile mills of the Merrimack Valley. The Massachusetts legislature granted the company its charter on June 5, 1830, after a long debate over whether to promote the construction of canals or railroads. The line is described by one of its investors as “A forty-four mile extension of Long Wharf.”
